Code Fix: Unable to deploy a workflow after re-configuring a SmartObject step


Issue Description

When you re-configure a SmartObject step that contains required method parameters, an error occurs when you deploy the workflow.

Error Message

The following error occurs: “Unable to deploy workflow. Error on SmartObject step: contains a reference to a reference that does not exist”.


  1. Ensure you have K2 Five (5.1) installed.
  2. Download the K2 Five (5.1) FP21 from K2 Partner and Customer Portal.
  3. Install the K2 Five (5.1) FP21 to apply the fix.
  4. Refresh the browser cache.


Select the SmartObject step in the workflow where the issue occurs, wait for loading to complete. You will now be able to deploy the workflow.
