Introduction

The "User Cannot be Found" error occurs for a number of different reasons which typically relate to database corruption on the SharePoint server. Sometimes it happens when user accounts are deleted and then recreated, when changes are made to the domain structure, from an improper backup and restore, and for other reasons that are currently under investigation. Other non-User objects may also be affected and could have related causes. Microsoft is aware of these issues and has several Knowledge Base articles detailing the causes of the "User Cannot be Found" error.

This KB article will be updated if more information becomes available from Microsoft about these and related errors due to database corruption.
